It offers extensive frequency coverage, precise amplitude control, and high signal purity, making it suitable for a wide range of R&D, manufacturing, and depot repair scenarios.

### Technical Specifications

**Frequency Coverage:**
* 0.1 Hz to 31.8 GHz in a single coaxial output.
* Extendable to 500 GHz or beyond with external multipliers.
* Option 22 provides audio frequency coverage from 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz.
* Frequency resolution down to 0.01 Hz for sweep functions.
* Frequency resolution of 0.02 Hz for Option 22 below 10 MHz.

**Output Power:**
* Standard output power specifications are available, with options for higher output.
* Option 15 provides high power RF components to increase output power levels.
* With Option 15 and Option 2, output power can range from -120 dBm to +25 dBm.
* High power output is available, eliminating the need for external amplification.
* Output power is typically derated by 2 dB when Option 22 is installed.

**Signal Purity:**
* Industry-best phase noise performance is a key characteristic.
* Offers three levels of SSB phase noise performance: Standard, Ultra low phase noise (Option 3), and Premium phase noise (Option 3X).
* Phase noise at 10 GHz with Option 3 can be as low as -115 dBc/Hz at a 100 kHz offset.
* Spectral purity is a design focus.

**Modulation Capabilities:**
* Full suite of modulation capabilities for complex signal simulations.
* Supports AM, FM, Pulse, Scan, Phase, I/Q, Analog, and Wideband FM.
* Option 28 offers AM, FM, FM, IM modulation.
* Internal and external AM, FM, Phase, and Pulse modulation are supported for analog signal emulation.
* Option 27 provides a built-in function and pulse generator.
* For IQ modulation, an IF input option allows easy up-conversion of an externally IQ-modulated RF signal.
* Option 20 adds an internal Scan modulator for simulating high-depth amplitude modulated signals.
* No modulation is available in the 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz band when Option 22 is installed.

**Switching Speed:**
* Fast switching speed of 5 ms (typical) reduces test time.

**Sweep Functions:**
* Linear and Logarithmic sweep modes are user-selectable.
* Step size in log sweep increases logarithmically with frequency.
* Variable number of steps from 1 to 10,000.
* Step size can range from 0.01 Hz to the full frequency range of the instrument.
* Dwell time per step is variable from 1 ms to 99 seconds.
* Fixed rate sweep allows setting the total sweep time, including lock time, from 20 ms to 99 seconds.
* Phase-locked control ensures precise frequency control for doubled frequencies.
* Every frequency step in the sweep range is phase-locked.

**Interfaces:**
* Intuitive front panel controls for easy operation.
* Remote control via GPIB (IEEE-488 interface bus) or Ethernet connectivity.
* All instrument functions, settings, and operating modes are controllable via GPIB commands (Native, SCPI).

**Time Base:**
* Internal time base can be calibrated to match an external 10 MHz reference.
* External 10 MHz reference input accepts signals with ±50 Hz tolerance.
* Option 16 adds an ovenized, 10 MHz crystal oscillator for high-stability time base.
