The JDS Uniphase PE3 is a Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) emulator that generates controlled differential group delay (DGD) for testing and characterizing fiber optic transmission systems. The instrument splits incoming light into two distinct polarization paths, applies precise optical delay to one path while attenuating the other, then recombines them to achieve accurate DGD control exceeding 125 ps with ±0.02 ps repeatability. This architecture enables PMD effect testing, PMD measurement instrument calibration, and sensitivity analysis in high-speed optical links without controlling output polarization state.
