Newport 818-IR – Germanium Photodetector

The Newport 818-IR Germanium Photodetector is a high-performance infrared sensor engineered for precise optical power measurement across the 780 to 1800 nm spectral range. Built around a Ø3 mm germanium photodiode optimized for zero-bias photovoltaic operation, it delivers low noise and exceptional stability with ±1% linearity and ±2% uniformity. The detector achieves minimum measurable power of 5 nW and maximum measurable power up to 3 W with benchtop meters, supported by a removable OD3 attenuator for high-power applications. An 8-degree angled mounting minimizes back-reflections, while the Ø10.3 mm clear aperture with integrated crosshair enables precise beam alignment. Each unit includes a NIST-traceable calibration report with wavelength-dependent uncertainty: 2.4% (780–1430 nm) and 2.6% (1430–1600 nm). The removable DB15 calibration module houses model, serial, and calibration date information for direct integration with compatible Newport power meters. Rise time of ≤2 µs and NEP of 0.015–0.018 pW/√Hz support both steady-state and pulsed measurement scenarios. Operating temperature range of 0 to +50°C with 70% maximum humidity (non-condensing) suits laboratory and field environments. The compact post-mounted housing accommodates threaded accessories, while the 1.5 m cable enables flexible bench integration.
